If you’re like me, you are probably thinking: “Why another blog & website & Email list & set of books to read & person to listen rabble on?”
Well. IDK. I’m just like this. Probably a mix of mental disorders, a knack for writing. A love of lists. And a thing for sharing my bizarre finds.
This isn’t your typical self-help narrative filled with heavy introspection and tedious exercises. Instead, it’s a light-hearted exploration, celebrating the hilarity and messiness of trying new things and finding joy in unexpected places. Through humor and humility, I discover that our “why” isn’t always a grand, singular revelation. Sometimes, it’s a mosaic of small passions and everyday moments that collectively paint the picture of who we are.
You put all that together and this is what comes of it. But here’s why you should care – it’s not just rambling, it’s transformative and hilarious! It might take you sideways. But at least you can’t say I never took you anywhere!

Keeping It Real
It all started in a hospital bed. I was laid up with my brain in a hammock and my head in stiches. Oh wait. that was the third time.
It all started when I was laid up in bed, my stomach in stitches and I’m lamenting at the thought of moving as I suddenly have learned the importance ab muscles bring to existing. As I stared at the sterile ceiling, surrounded by the incessant beeping of medical machines unable to so much as fart without fainting, I found myself in the throes of an existential crisis. Everyone around me seemed to have it all figured out—their passion projects, their purposeful lives. Meanwhile, I was just trying to figure out if I could ask the nurse if I was allowed to pee yet.
That’s when I decided to embark on a grand adventure—a quest, if you will—to find my purpose by diving headfirst into as many hobbies as possible. Spoiler alert: it got messy.
First up, pencil drawing. How hard could it be to put pencil to paper and create art? Very hard, as it turns out. My first attempt looked like a toddler’s doodle after a sugar rush. But there was something surprisingly calming about it. Even if my drawings resembled a Degas gone wrong, I found solace in the quiet scribbling. Turns out, sketching your cat (or trying to) can be quite therapeutic, even if they end up looking more like a cute hairy potato.
Feeling somewhat Zen, I moved on to coding. They said it would be logical and straightforward and you just follow these simple steps and “Hello World” will appear. They lied. My screen soon filled with error messages that seemed to mock my every keystroke. But oh, the small victories—like making a dot move across the screen—felt monumental. It was as if I’d cracked the Enigma code. Coding taught me patience and persistence. Plus, it gave me a newfound respect for tech-heads who make googling things look easy.
With my tech-savvy confidence boosted, I decided to pen the next great novel. Instead, I ended up with a collection of half-baked ideas and plots that made no sense. My ideas seemed more confused than I was. Yet, writing became a way to explore my thoughts and unleash my creativity. It didn’t have to be perfect; sometimes it was just about getting the words out and seeing where they took me.
Then came sports. I tried everything from tennis to yoga. In tennis, I managed to hit as many balls as there are young people running for president. Yoga had me tangled in positions that looked more like interpretive dance. Karate.. well karate was great. But sports showed me the importance of physical activity and the humor in human limitations. No Pain No Gain? No sir! Absolutely not for me. Plus, it’s a great way to laugh at yourself, especially when you’re trying to balance on one leg while holding a pose called the “Standing in the Grocery Isle Reaching for the Last Box of Cheerios” and failing spectacularly.
Next on the list was collecting things. DVDs, coins, rare vinyl records—you name it, I collected it. Soon, my home looked like a miniature museum. While my wife called it hoarding, I saw it as curating. Collecting taught me about passion and the thrill of the hunt. Each item held a story, and those stories became part of my journey. Plus, nothing beats the excitement of finding a rare selection of pocket watches at a flea market, even if it means elbowing an old man lingering far too long out of the way.
Ironically, collecting hobbies became a hobby in itself. I had a checklist of hobbies to try, from knitting to skydiving (quite fun.) Some were successes, others were laughable failures, but each added to my repertoire. Sometimes, the journey of trying different things is the hobby. It’s a reminder that life’s variety is its own reward. Plus, I liked the look my neurosurgeon gave me when I told him I went skydiving right before my surgery.
Finally, I turned to the simple act of being funny for myself. I realized that making myself laugh was enough. I didn’t need to perform on stage or seek validation from an audience. The joy of finding humor in everyday life, in my own private moments, was profoundly fulfilling. Whether it was chuckling at my failed attempts at new hobbies or creating silly scenarios in my head, humor became my lens for viewing the world.
