Why choose?

Daily writing prompt
Dogs or cats?

Questions like “Are you a cat person or a dog person?” are as divisive as politics and have no need to be. Why choose only one? Why not pick the best candidate? Life is too short to limit your love to a single species.

Take it from me—I’m currently writing this blog post with my cat, Toulouse, lounging on my keyboard like a furry editor, my dog Lu snoozing under my desk like an adorable footrest, and a fish tank bubbling gently in the background, home to Rabbit Snails and Vampire Shrimp (and no, they don’t sparkle). Each of these creatures brings something unique and wonderfully chaotic to my life, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Embracing all the options is more fun for me than picking one or the other. Each pet, with its quirks and characteristics, adds a new dimension to my daily routine. My cat, with his insistent need to be involved in every keystroke, reminds me that deadlines are optional and stretching across my keyboard is mandatory. He has already gotten me locked out of a website today by pressing too many keys that I got caught in a spam filter. The other cat is out being the cute diva she is.

My dogs, a loyal friend always ready for a nap or an adventure, teaches me about unwavering loyalty and the joy of simple pleasures—like finding that one patch of sunlight to bake like the potato she is. Meanwhile, my fish tanks, with its mesmerizing Rabbit Snails and enigmatic Vampire Shrimp, introduces me to a whole new world of aquatic wonders and the delicate balance of nature. Fun fact: Goldfish actually have a memory span of months, not seconds, so they totally remember that time you forgot to feed them! They’re really cute, though!

When you have a loyal pack of all types, you learn to appreciate the diversity of beauty, science, and ways to express creativity. There’s an undeniable beauty in the way each animal interacts with its environment and with you. From the silky fur of a content cat to the rhythmic wag of a dog’s tail, to the silent, graceful movements of fish and aquatic critters even as they follow your every movement in the room like they have nothing better to do, every moment is a lesson in nature’s artistry.

And speaking of artistry, did you know that dressing up your pets can be a form of creative expression? Sure, the cat might look at me with disdain when I attempt to put a bow tie on her, but the resulting photo is always worth the mild threat to my life. By mild, I mean wild.

Moreover, the science behind caring for different species is fascinating and sometimes hilariously complicated. By taking care of fish tanks I have inadvertently learned all about waterways, taking care of pools, and how to not kill aquatic species (harder than you’d think.)

Understanding the dietary needs of a fish versus a cat or the exercise requirements of both cats and dogs compared to a rabbit snail deepens my appreciation for the complexity of life. It’s like running a miniature, wildly diverse zoo, where each creature’s well-being is interconnected with the others. And let’s not forget the joy of discovering random trivia—like how goldfish can remember things for months. They perk up every time you come into the room! If that doesn’t make you feel better I don’t know what does.

The excitement of learning new things never gets old. One day you’re figuring out the best diet for a bloated goldfish, the next you’re discovering that your “goat dog” Lu isn’t just rotund but has a thyroid issue. Each challenge is an opportunity to dive into a world of knowledge, and every vet visit turns into a mix of a comedy sketch designed for a reality show and a science lesson.

In the end, having a variety of pets enriches my life in ways I never imagined. It’s a constant reminder that love knows no bounds, and that every creature, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, has something valuable to offer. So why choose one when you can have them all? Embrace the chaos, enjoy the diversity, and let each pet teach you something new and exciting. Life is more colorful, hilarious, and fulfilling when you appreciate all the options.
